If you are eager to change your Reddit username, we will outline some special rules to check your eligibility. We’ll also cover the process of changing your Reddit username on a new account, setting up the display name, and what happens to usernames you’ve used on deleted accounts.

Reddit Username Restrictions for Changes

Reddit offers two ways to sign up. You can either sign up with an existing Apple/Google account or directly with an email address.

The following are some rules to keep in mind:

When you sign up with an Apple or Google account, Reddit allows you to change your username once only. If you sign up with an email address, you’ll have to add a username during signup that cannot be changed afterward. Once you’ve used a Reddit username, you can’t use it again.

How to Change Your Reddit Username (Apple/Google Accounts)

Reddit assigns a random username when signing up with either a Google or Apple account. After you log in for the first time, you will see a pop-up asking if you want to change or keep your randomly assigned username.

If you select Keep Username option, the randomly assigned username will remain on your profile permanently and cannot be changed. If you click on Change Username, Reddit gives you the option to change your username to your liking.

If you have already signed up using a Google or Apple account, but you’re not sure whether you’ve changed the username, selected the Keep Username option, or closed the pop-up without selecting any options, Reddit lets you confirm this.

You can do this by logging into your Reddit account, clicking on your profile avatar dropdown menu in the top-right corner, then choosing the Profile option under My Stuff.

Reddit’s support website notes that you have 30 days to change your username when you sign up with Google or Apple.

Follow the steps below to change your Reddit username from the pop-up:

In the pop-up window, click on the Change Username. Choose a valid username. Click on the Continue button. Click Save Username in the confirmation box.

You can keep using the randomly assigned username by clicking on Keep Username and confirming it.

Once you set up the randomly assigned username or change it, you won’t be able to change it again. As a result, you will have to live with the same username unless you create a new account.

The same rules apply to changing the username on the Reddit app as well. Additionally, the process for changing the username is nearly identical.

How to Set Up Your Reddit Username While Signing Up With an Email Address

If you wish to sign up with an email address, Reddit allows you to set your username during the process. After setting up the username, you will not see a popup to modify it in the Profile section as we did earlier.

Here are the steps to set up a Reddit username when creating a new account with a personal email address:

Visit the Reddit sign-up page. Enter a unique username and password. Click on the Sign Up button.

You cannot change the username you added during sign-up. Thus, if you have already added it while signing in with an email ID, you cannot change it.

How to Change Your Reddit Display Name

You can also change or set up your display name on Reddit. This is just another name Reddit displays with your username on your profile. However, all of your interactions on Reddit, including posts and comments, take place under your Reddit username.

To set it up, follow these steps:

In the top-right corner, click the profile avatar dropdown menu. Go to the Profile section under My Stuff. Click on the gear icon right next to your profile. Type in the custom name in the Display name (optional) box.

As soon as you leave the display name box, the changes will be saved, and you’ll see the display name right above your Reddit username on your profile.

In contrast to Reddit usernames, you can change your display name at any time. Likewise, if you wish to change your Reddit profile picture, you can do that.

You Can’t Reuse Reddit Usernames

Reddit explicitly states that the Reddit username can be used only once on any account. When you deactivate an account, the username goes away with it. You will no longer be able to use it on any of the accounts in the future.

Choose Your Username Wisely

Reddit’s rules for changing usernames should be clear to you. In addition, you’ll have no trouble changing the display name on your profile. However, be sure to set your username accurately the first time. Also, avoid confusing the username with the display name!
